I think this stinginess is detrimental to our economy. Think of the businesses that could be build if only the shark types did not set their artificially high profit margin goals. A great deal of successful businesses could be built. Alas, the mighty incremental profit gain is all these people live for. Seems myopic to me.

The millionaires are stingy and cheap. If they are interested they will bleed the work and company for the growth of their own remarkable wealth laughing amongst themselves at how these fools will come to them to sell their work and life away. They leave the entrepreneur with a false sense of hope with their low end deals. With a lot of time and energy put into the work to be falsely elevated with no real results. Backers and entrepreneurs who care more about a hitting a 7 on a dice roll than anything. I don't see any of the contestants products being successful, especially with greed from both parties solely in mind.

Nazneen, is it sending a link to a secondary address that you put on file with gmail?

Alternatively, what browser are you using? Try using Internet Explorer just to make sure there is nothing on the page that is hidden due to an incompatible browser.

I will check out the website. However, I would think you may have legal troubles with moving the book off and onto the Kindle and facilitate the lending of the eBook. This is the Napster trouble all over again.
That is correct about agency pricing. The publishers came into that due to Apple creating their iBooks store.
I do not begrudge people making money off of these things. Hey, if they charged a couple of bucks under the dead tree price, that would be fine as long as lending could happen. All I want is that what I do with my books now, could be done with the eBooks. The problem is FEAR. They fear the big rip off. Well you know as well as I about the books that have been scanned and are available as downloads now. We can attempt to prevent this, but no herculean effort will stop this piracy. So move on and satisfy the regular customers. That's all.
What needs to happen, and what is about to happen is to remove these middlemen (RIAA, movie distributors, publishers) from the process. Those industries will go into death throes and claim the world is going to end if DRM is not enforced. Then they'll die and no one will know they're gone. They could have managed the process and ensured end to end delivery and maintenance of the lending, but that wasn't good enough for them because they wouldn't adapt.
On our planet, species die every year because they are not adapting to the changes in the Earth. These people will follow the same fate. The content creators will be in direct content with their customers and that will be a great time for customers.
Thanks for responding,

I hear you.. Here is another great article about the games that the publishers are playing with eBook prices!
http://dearauthor.com/wordpress/2011/01/16/why-do-ebooks-cost-so-much/

We think that this greediness by the publishers is only going to push people even further towards using the lending features of their devices. So I'm creating a website, Booklends, which will make it easy for Kindle users to find and share books with each other. Visit http://www.booklends.com to sign up for our mailing list, and we'll let you know when our site is finished (probably within a week or so)..

Tom, I just got around to reading your post. Of course you should not be upset with me, as the article you refer to was written two years before you posted it here.

From the Dead Sea Effect article comments:

<blockquote cite="">In services people were measured entirely by billable hours. The quality of your work only mattered if the customer was irate because you could not get anything done. </blockquote cite="">

In real life I clearly see that The Corporation wants people <cite>busy</cite>, not necessarily <cite>productive</cite>, or <cite>brilliant</cite>, or <cite>moving the company forward.</cite>

The comments about IBM are poignant and accurately reflect the fact that large companies cannot get themselves to remove dead weight. What about the comment that effective employers were more likely to leave for smaller companies, where the recognition factor is higher? Most people vote for security and the steady paycheck that comes along with it. Great programmers, I think, remain peppered between corporations large and small, with the risk of small companies or going solo deterring a great deal of movement out of the large corporation.

More from the comments:

<blockquote cite="">It makes no sense to spend a lot of money hiring and keeping an IT engineer and then penny-pinching on her/his development tools, yet I have seen that time and again. And that also tends to drive the best IT engineers away. ..</blockquote cite="">

Who out there is not unable to get MS Project, or a fancy hole punch, or whatever tool it is that you really, really need? This problem is like a magical disease, one that boosts Bill Lumbergh's stock by one-half of one percent and leaves everyone else in its path miserable.

Someone commented about market-rate raises. I love to hear, <cite>three percent is competitive for this area.</cite> This might cover the cost of $3 gas, or the yearly increase in health insurance, or the rise in food (why is food so much costlier in 2010?), but only one of these.

<blockquote cite="">Why is such a high percentage of development activity in your company purely maintenance?</blockquote cite="">

Replacing old systems had definite challenges, but I think you and I Tom would be happy with a staff ninety percent of which implements new systems, and ten percent of which provides maintenance. Obviously our Startup experiment gives us the chance to implement such, but for most companies, the reality is the inverse of these figures.

Apparently this is a common thing that system administrators are missing. I just created a Skype account, the account was activated and I was logged into Skype. However the next time I went to login I got a bad password message. I did a password reset, then entered my initial password as the new password. I received an error that the password was longer than twenty characters. (I never count these things.)

So the initial sign-up and login on Skype accepts any length password, but only the first twenty characters are stored for subsequent logins. UGH! Who's running this place anyways?

You are such a putz. You understand NOTHING. That's why I'm the programmer and YOU'RE the pretty face.
Why did you even TRY to use that pea brain of yours? They could cut my head off and I would still be able to out think the marketing weasel.

Cooking with GASOLINE means:
1) ITS DANGEROUS ! In programming parlance one is usually dangerous when they can get past the hello world stage and they understand a little of the programming.
2) One is able to LAUNCH their development process without figuring out all these nuances that inevitably rise.

Ok I've had my iPad for about a week and its still fun, slick, but above all useful. I one handed typed in an idea for an idea for when I write fiction. It was very quick. I listened to music at work through its speakers. Played a game on the train ride into and out of town. So a little bit of everything. Tonight I've provisioned it, and will load an app we're developing for a client onto the device.

It was very snappy to me. I wasn't timing anything, but nothing was noticeably slow. Closing one app, and then selecting and running another was not slow to me. Faster than the 2G? Yeah I thin' so.
"Fly"? Well I would have to wonder what the meaning of that means. To me "Fly" means instantaneous or near-instantaneous operation. No its not like that. Its fast but not like my Quad Core which is near-instantaneous.
It has a sharp display so it probably sucks some speed out of the CPU.
To me and for my needs, definitely worth the price.

How was the processing speed? Did it "fly" as Jobs claims?" From the looks of the demos, it appears to be a LOT snappier than a 2G iPod Touch. Please give me your thoughts. Thanks.

@Scott
Thanks for responding. Yes ANY tool can create crap. The fact that they are culling the crap-apps from their app store is evidence that 1) They have approved a crap-app, 2) The crap-app was generated with their tools, 3) They know there is already crap-apps.
One of the things Jobs also stated was that he wanted to prevent the Flash crap-apps from being ported to his platform. Maybe the app approval team would be overwhelmed? Well, with the iPad announcement, the ranks of the developer applications exploded. So he's in up to his eyeballs anyway.
I believe part of this is because he is paying for the approval labor, yet, in a way, not seeing enough of a return. One would have to include all hardware, applications fees ($99 per year), along with the percentage made off the paid-for apps. Looking at the Blackberry and Microsoft app store and developer contracts, they DEFINITELY have it all wrong. So yet again, Steve trumps the other two companies because he has truly thought through the entire process instead of just slapping something together at the last minute.
I'm not sure why Jobs is hip shooting with the comments. It just doesn't seem "like him". He's just making up some stuff to say. Almost like our politicians.
Mr. Jobs, just state it as it is.
Thanks for the comment Scott.

Interesting points. Apple's policy also neglects the fact that its perfectly feasible to create rubbish using their native tools. Judging by the quality of some of the applications seen on the iPhone, its hard to believe that Apple has any sort of process for performing quality control on them.
I really enjoy the product, but Job's comments don't even pass the laugh test.

A correction to your own life: You LOVE 30 hour programming sessions. It is just overbearing when you work for the man all week and Joroto all night.

Realistically the number one reason for becoming a manger: "This is the natural progression of my professional life. It pays better and people will admire me, so I will apply for the job."

Well its Saturday 7:20 AM, and the marketing department must take a nap. I must be prepared for the competitive mid-morning Team Fortress games. Oh yea, I will edit our new client's contract...well, this week...probably.

Interesting that my Recaptcha for this post is "time", "alluring". And thus God speaks to me.

You HAVE been programming 30 hours straight haven't you been? You are calling our company Mars and talking to Spock who does not even remember you since he got schmazzled by Genesis. Wow. Have some Pop Rocks and Coke, take a nap, and snap out of it. (Not in that order.)

How about this: We'll partner with any woman (anyone actually) who has the goods to fund the next project. There Tom! We are no doubt equal opportunity and that is the best you can get.

No inventor is more cool than him. I read Paul Israel's book about Thomas A. Edison, and though he was an amazing man, I believe Tesla had grander visions. MIT just figured out wireless power transfer, something Tesla worked on before he died.
Think of this, Tesla KNEW that it could be done. He absolutely knew it, but couldn't figure out the method of transmittance. People like that are not geniuses, they are visionaries. This is exactly what the drones in most company management pools fight against and try to quash.

If I were the Chinese government, I would detach all interfaces from the Internet and "make their own". They (The Chinese Government) become a Tier 1 provider, the only one in China, and they can control all the access that they want.
The fact that they HAVEN'T done that indicates to me that they want to roll the dice and appear to not look like a totalitarian government. They are very smart to attempt to walk the line.
Always remember, they can always revert and shut down the access points into and out of China. They are figuring out where the internet lives within their philosophy of government and life.
I have to say, I don't mind them shutting out porn. However I do believe the price of losing freedom of information is too high to pay for that, and therefore we should live with porn and let people choose.
Protect our children (somehow), let them grow up and then choose. Choice is not a dirty word, nor is it inherently bad.

Always remember, they can always revert and shut down the access points into and out of China. They are figuring out where the internet lives within their philosophy of government and life.
I have to say, I don’t mind them shutting out porn. However I do believe the price of losing freedom of information is too high to pay for that, and therefore we should live with porn and let people choose.
Protect our children (somehow), let them grow up and then choose. Choice is not a dirty word, nor is it inherently bad.

I do have one customer using the Bat! version 3.9xx in Windows 98. He has downloaded the complete chain certificate himself, repeatedly imported it into the Bat! and added it to the address book, with no luck in eliminating this error.

Talked to Tom about this. After his initial, "Newbies!" comment for those of us who had this problem, both on Windows and Mac, he then became helpful.

Apparently under a newer system, certificates cannot be renewed. Our provider may have renewed a certificate, which renders it invalid. After my phone call and who knows how many others, they may have issued a new certificate. Apparently not only Windows XP, but also Apple Mail (Steve you'll have to show this to me some day, sounds fascinating!) choked on this. Our Apple guy (every company needs one) was able to delete his certificate, and the Apple system reliably downloaded the new chain of certificates. The Bat! e-mail client is one that has the worse hissy fits, thus I had to jump through the above hoops to update it.

Tom also stated that Windows just plain has trouble with PKCS12 certificates. If a provider issues such, that could be a problem also.

@Tim
In iTunes go to Store and then on that menu (On my Mac at least) is a menu option that says "Deauthorize Computer". I'm not sure past that because I haven't had to do that yet.
I'm grasping at straws since that error message is so vague. But taking into account what I had to do to get mine to work (and one other post here worked too) I would say it is somehow related to the credit card account and the main Apple iTunes site figuring out whether you are putting in all billing information as well as being THE computer that is allowed to purchase using your account.
One other thing, now that I'm talking to you. I wonder if you can setup a brand new account on Apple just for this upgrade. Leave the old one active for your music. That should be your last ditch "Hail Mary" pass to "fix" this.
Good luck and keep me in the loop. I'll help if I can.

Tom, thanks a lot for your response and for trying to help me out on this issue. I tried as many of the things in your last post and still no luck. Still getting the same screwed up graphical interface and the same errors (unknown errors -1004 and 10054). I've got 3 computers authorized and I was not able to deauthorize the other two, mainly b/c I don't know how. I think one of them is my old laptop that's now out of my hands and decommissioned. How do you deauthorize such a computer??

@Chad
Ummm because they ran out of time most likely. This is normal programmer behavior: 1) Management sets arbitrary marketing deadlines, 2) Programmers are "a dime a dozen" and "should" be able to get anything done. "Why, they saved our butts when they implented XYZ in two weeks, this is simple web programming" says 'Management'. So programmers must cut corners otherwise THEY have failed (management NEVER fails).
Chad, this is why I took this role at Joroto. I will protect the programmers and engineers from the pinhead marketing weasels and other management. Programmers will be kings, not pawns. We're going to pay our great programmer many times the price of a mediocre programmer. We will NOT have mediocre programmers working for us. They are a drag on our schedules.
Thanks for posting.

@Tim
This could be "yet another error" that this error code is used for.
I went back into my Account information on iTunes (through the Store --> View my account) and the security code is also not there. It probable shouldn't as that is the last piece of info that identifies your credit card. So that is not unusual.
Try this: If you have multiple computers authorized, deauthorize all except this one, put in the security code in iTunes --> Store --> View my account, and try it again.
The indication that this didn't save in iTunes is that the Download from the store asks you to login twice and change the billing info.
If this doesn't happen change credit card to none, save, then go back in and enter the credit card info. NOTE: Make sure the expiry date of the credit card is correct.
Sorry this is frustrating. All companies seem to "lose it" in this last mile. Although I would say Apple brings it further down the road than other companies before they fail.
Report back your results.

I entered my security code and clicked Done, then clicked Done again on the Apple Account Information pane and I get the same error, "unknown error (-1004)". When I go back into my credit card information, the security code field is blank again. HELP, this is so incredibly frustrating.

Look goober, AT&T HAAAASSSSS to make money from someone. They completely underestimated (as did the entire industry) the Apple factor with their iPhone. AT&T has a lock on the iPhone, although Congress is stepping in of course, but it is not making a lot of money from Apple's success.
Remember that Apple gets a cut of the monthly revenue that AT&T charges. A first in the industry, and AT&T thought it would not be as successful as it ended up being. Look for all AT&T prices to increase and services to decrease.
Only in America does a company do this.

Delete this. Who cares about a company that cannot maintain focus on its core competencies? No one that's who.
I wish them the best but this is ridiculous that a company that has absolutely dominated, allowed themselves to sit on their laurels.
Google hasn't and still doesn't sit on its laurels. It continues to attack, ferociously and vigorously all markets that it enters.

Umm Yeahh. Didn't you get the TPS reports concerning my absence? I'll have to fire a department just to make a point.
Your easy days are over cupcake. I'm back, I'm nationwide.
btw I have several new ideas, wish we could find someone to talk to about Venture Capital and funding the ideas, or at least one idea. We would make them stinkin' rich. Mwhahahaaa
Let the beatings begin.

In Contribute, after "Other blog type" you SHOULD browse to your blog and then click OK.
Click Next.
Then the username and password work fine and it no longer asks you for the access point.
A bug in Contribute.
